It’s the most wonderful time of year: Spring Cleaning Season! Multiple studies suggest that a desk surface and its items are often dirtier than a restroom. To make your workplace healthier, and spring-ready, disinfect the following most-used-items at your desk:
Telephone
Wipe your phone cord and surface with a disinfectant wipe or cloth. Be sure to give extra attention to the mouth area and buttons, especially if you or someone who has used your phone has been ill.
Mouse
At a minimum, unplug your mouse and use a disinfectant wipe or cloth to wipe the surface at the end of your workday. Make sure to clean all crevasses to remove hard-to-reach dirt and germs.
Keyboard
All those buttons on your keyboard surface need TLC too. Using a disinfectant wipe or cloth, clean the buttons and spaces in-between them. It's surprising to see how much-unwanted junk is in a keyboard.
Cellphone
A cell phone holds so many germs and dust from constant usage. Disinfect your cell phone surface and cover with a wipe or cloth once a week to keep it clean.
Computer Monitors
Turn off your computer, then wipe off the base and surrounding frame of your computer monitor with a cloth moistened with a computer cleaner. Most solvents are too harsh for computer monitors. A computer cleaner provides an effective but safe clean for your equipment.
Desk Surface
Remove all items from your desk and wipe the entire surface with a disinfectant wipe or cloth. Allow the area to dry then place your desk items back on the surface.
Drawers
Remove all items from your drawers and clean all interior and exterior surfaces with a disinfectant wipe or cloth. Use this as an opportunity to throw out old items you no longer need.
Office Chair
Believe it or not, office chairs collect a lot of unwanted dust and germs. Vacuum all crumbs in crevasses and cracks. If you don’t have a vacuum, you can do this using a cloth or paper towel to pick up loose debris. For fabric or mesh upholstered surfaces use a cleansing cloth to clean the entire chair. For genuine leather chairs, a leather chair cleaner on the surface cleans it best. Be sure to check the tag on your office chair for more cleaning instructions before cleaning.
Cubical walls
If you or anyone in your office is suffering from allergies, thorough cleaning of your cubical walls may bring some relief. Remove all items on your cubical walls and toss any old items you can to part with. If your cubical walls made with fabric upholstery, the cleaning regime is similar to an office chair. Vacuum the walls or use a damp cloth or cleansing cloth to remove dust and particles from the surface. If the surface is not fabric, use a disinfectant wipe or cloth to clean the area. Be sure to clean from the top to the bottom of the panel, cleaning in a circular motion.
